The dictionary Merram-Webster defines a princess as: a “member of a royal family,” the “wife of a prince” or “usually an attractive girl or woman who is treated with special attention”. Nowhere in the dictionary, do the words “courage”, “energy” or “determination” appear. And yet the latest Walt Disney animation Moanaseems to want to redefine what being a princess is all about.

The last few Disney princesses, beginning with the smart Belle and leading up to the energetic Frozen (2013)sisters, have all had the independent spirit and desire to break out of the old rules they were born into. However, they have all still had a handsome guy to help save the day.

Disney’s movie Moanashows a positive change. The film follows the adventures of the teenage daughter of a Pacific Island chief and her struggle to find out who she is.

As the daughter of Chief Tui, Moana is expected to follow her village’s traditions and rules, including the one her father has been telling her about since she was an infant: “Don’t go beyond the reef.”

迪士尼最新电影《海洋奇缘》有了积极的改变。影片讲述了太平洋某岛酋长的女儿、一位十几岁少年的冒险历程，以及她艰苦的自我探索之旅。

Unfortunately for Moana—whose name just happens to be the word for “ocean” in many Polynesian languages—she is drawn to the water, which she thinks is exciting. And when the food supply for the island suddenly gets lower, Moana sets out on a journey to find ways to save her island home. The story, inspired by the history and traditions of the Pacific, is a breath of fresh ocean air for everyone sick and tired of the all-too-familiar stories of Disney princesses.

From birth, Moana is a respected part of her community, and her parents and grandmother are proud of who she is and the fact that she will one day make a fantastic chief, just like her father and his father before him. There is no love interest for Moana—she doesn’t need one.

对莫阿娜来说，这真是太不幸了——在很多波利尼西亚语中，她的名字恰好是“海洋”的意思——在她心目中，海洋激情澎湃，魅力锐不可当。当岛上的食物储存突然紧缺起来，莫阿娜即刻动身去设法拯救岛上家园。对于那些老套迪士尼公主故事感到烦腻的每一个人来说，这源自太平洋的历史与传统的故事情节，犹如一阵清新的海风。

Moanashows respect to Pacific Islanders by presenting us with a strong female character unlike any we’ve seen in Hollywood films—a hero who is smart, strong and sympathetic, who is independent yet belongs to a group. For a long time, we’ve seen too many images of princesses based on the beauty standards of Europeans. Why not enjoy the new face of fierceness?

More importantly, when mothers and fathers tell their daughters what it means to be a princess, the words “adventurous,” “strong” and “compassionate” can now be added to the definition.

莫阿娜这一角色可谓对太平洋岛民的礼赞，让我们看到了不同于任何好莱坞电影所表现的鲜明女性形象——英姿勃勃，又聪明，又强壮，富有同情心，特立独行而又不游离于集体之外。很长时间以来，我们见到的公主，全是基于欧洲人的审美标准。为什么不去欣赏一下这张激情如火的新面孔呢？

更重要的是，当父母跟女儿讲解什么是真正的公主时，他们现在可以加入“勇于冒险”“坚强”“富有同情心”等字眼了。
