Generally, switching around the holidays is a difficult choice. Usually, job hiring decisions will be made near the holidays as most people are in the holiday mood and I'm not thinking about hiring people. However, most people quit after the holidays so they can take the holiday as a job benefit. It might not help you hired again, but at least you get the benefits of a paid holiday.
If you are a good employee there is never a good time to quit according to your boss. They’re going to miss all the work you do for them.
One advantage to quitting before the holidays is you get some extra time off before you start your other job since they will likely ask you to begin working after the first of the year.
If the USA is anything like the UK, Christmas and New Year, is not a good time to quit your job; unless as Lydna Spiegel says below you have job to go to and a start date.
Certainly in the UK, the whole job market goes in to “hibernation” between the last week of November through to the fist week of February (January is what we call the “hangover” month). Those companies who have their (Financial) Year Ends on 31st December. I can never understand why as it a dreadful month to make sales or recover money from 17th December to 15th January the following year.
If you do quit, do not expect to get any work, even as a temp. Quite literally everyone stops working and do not get back in to a proper regime normally due to those taking their remaining holiday leave before it expires or want the whole of Christmas and New Year off altogether. That wipes out 2 weeks !
Then you may get jobs being advertised, either because people have served their notice period over that time, the new budgets are coming in to place and employers want to recruit new staff. Then you have the pre-audit season for those who had their Year End 31st December and need to file their accounts with the UK Companies House; and that company are trying to recover the debtors to make things look better for year end. The same goes for those who have their year end 31st March; and usually have their external audits May /June.
So really December and January are a wash out apart from brief temporary roles. I would stay put until after that date. And remember that it is easier to get a job whilst you are working than unemployed (as I have found out).
By all means look for jobs, but don’t resign until you have got and accepted the other offer in writing.
