The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is one of the most important traditional Chinese festivals. It falls on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, which usually falls in mid-June on the Gregorian calendar.
OriginThere are many legends about the origin of the festival. The most widely accepted story is that the festival commemorates the death of the famous poet and minister Qu Yuan (c. 340–278 BCE). Qu Yuan was a loyal official of the Chu Kingdom. However, he was slandered and banished by the king. Devastated by the betrayal, Qu Yuan drowned himself in the Miluo River.
The local people who admired Qu Yuan raced to the river and tried to save him. They paddled their boats and beat drums to scare away the fish and prevent them from eating Qu Yuan's body. They also threw rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves (zongzi) into the water as a sacrifice to Qu Yuan's spirit.
CustomsOn the day of the festival, people generally eat zongzi, a pyramid-shaped rice dumpling filled with different fillings such as meat, beans, and egg yolks. It is said that eating zongzi can ward off evil spirits and ensure good health.
The other main activity of the festival is watching dragon boat races. The boats are brightly painted and decorated with dragon heads and tails. A team of rowers paddles to the rhythm of drums and compete against other teams to reach the finish line first. The races are not only a sport but also a way to pay tribute to Qu Yuan's heroic spirit.
Apart from these two main activities, people also hang mugwort leaves and calamus on their doors and windows to ward off evil spirits. Children may wear colorful sachets containing fragrant herbs and silk threads. In some places, people also perform lion dances and dragon dances in the streets.
Reflections on the FestivalThe Dragon Boat Festival is a time for family reunion and cultural heritage. It reminds people of the power of loyalty, courage, and perseverance, as embodied in Qu Yuan's life and death. It also celebrates the rich diversity of Chinese culture, from the culinary art of zongzi to the aesthetic beauty of dragon boats.
In recent years, the festival has gained more international attention and recognition. It has become a symbol of Chinese civilization and a bridge between East and West. As more and more people learn about the festival, they may appreciate the colorful history and traditions of China and deepen their cultural exchange and understanding.
